A Personal Message

Ownership

Naked Cakes has been acquired by a new baker/owner, Vicky Khoo since June 2018.
Vicky is an avid baker who is extremely passionate about making the best tasting cakes. Having started since the tender age of 14 (with her first mixer), she has garnered over 12 years of experience.
Vicky really enjoys and resonates with the journey it takes to decorate a cake instead of the end-product. This is the real purpose she is able to connect/visualise with the main vision for what Naked Cakes was first aiming for.
Vicky is also a financial advisor/accountant by training thus, her meticulous nature is an absolute asset in the baking science world.

The Beginning

I think this is a scene familiar to any family baker who runs a home business – you’d put in a full day setting up, buying ingredients, scouring the far ends of the country for those rare things you need, and actually making and selling your goods. The day doesn’t end even when you put down your spatula and take that last order: you owe it to your kids and partner to spend a few waning hours with them. And after the young ones are tucked in, it’s back to the kitchen to make sure everything’s washed and cleaned.

At the start, things were rough, but manageable. But businesses grow. Circumstances change. I found that the business was like a child itself; ever hungry and always demanding attention. It asked for my time, my effort, my strength. And it asked for a lot.

It’s said that in order to chase a passion, we have to make a lot of sacrifices. And so, I told myself that it would be worth it in the end. I was doing this for myself, after all. Myself and my family. I was helping. I was following my heart and dreams. I was giving myself a lot of reasons to ignore the problems that crept up from behind.

My health started to fail. As I was doing everything by myself, I would even work through weekends, through tired periods, and even from hospital when fatigue finally struck me down.

And then one day, my daughter of 14 months came to me. She saw me, like every other day, put on my work gear and go to the kitchen to start the day. She pulled at my apron, eyes full of tears, wordlessly struggling with the piece of cloth. She knew, more than I had, what that simple apron meant – that she would have lost time with her mother for one more day.

She begged me to stop.

So I did.

The Change

Stopping, however, didn’t mean I quit. It meant I changed direction. This whole ordeal made me realise that there was another way to do this. I would help not only myself but as many struggling families as I could because till this day, the sight of my crying daughter still affects me.

I realised that what was lacking from the local baking community was, well, community. Back when I was still grinding the job, the only person I could unload on was my poor darling husband, and all the bakers I knew were just contacts, not friends. This all just made me feel very alone.

Being able to help others, being able to ask for assistance for tough times, and being able to lighten the load were key areas that my experience taught me was necessary in this business. And that’s what I decided to focus on.

Today, Naked Cakes has grown into a thriving network of bakers, decorators, customers and clients. I now support other bakers by just doing what I can to help. I provide services from the biggest businesses down to the single individual. Inspired by the ideal that baking should be fun first and work second, I’ve started this company in order to make this dream come true.

And I very much hope that you will join us here in the Naked Cakes family, and that together, we can make baking about the fun again.

Philosophy

The Philosophy of Naked Cakes can be summarized in three points: Quality, Community, and Confidentiality.

Quality

When Chef Jane Tan got her start with baking in Australia, she was impressed by the culinary standards of the country. Therefore, a core belief of the company is to provide cakes with the unparalleled taste of freshness and quality, in order to uphold the standards that Chef Jane learned to love and appreciate.

Community

As we believe in the community as much as the business, we provide free, no-strings-attached consultancy on the topics of running a home bakery business and cake decoration. Anyone from the individual to the large business owner may contact us during business hours to ask any question they may like – even if it’s just to get a bit of general styling advice.

While we hope you will end up using our services, we do not place any obligation upon our customers, and you can rest easy knowing we will never pressure or force anyone to subscribe to our business.

Confidentiality

Naked Cakes will never give out your personal, private information. We’re bakers too, and we understand the sensitivity of certain subjects. We assure you that we will never use your personal information for our own benefit without your acknowledgement and agreement.

We will also never require you to disclose your agreements/arrangements with us. While we love the shout-out once in a while, we will never demand it. In other words, if you don’t want to tell anyone that we’re helping out, you don’t have to.

Naked cakes provides services for two sectors – PERSONAL and BUSINESS. Please take a look at what we can do for you below.

From Us to Consumers

Providing cake bases for personal fun

Have you ever wanted a personalized cake but couldn’t find someone to do the exact things you want?

Or have you ever seen a cake on display and thought: ‘Gee, I could do better!’

Or maybe you’ve just always wanted to try cake-decorating but you don’t know the second thing about baking.

We’ve got you covered!

You can order a cake base and decorative elements from us for your own personal use. The cake will arrive fully, freshly baked, ready for you to decorate to your heart’s content. They’re great for birthdays, weddings, parties, or if you’ve ever just been curious and wanted to try it out.

What we want to do is to give everyone the opportunity to ice, frost, and decorate their own cakes themselves and enjoy the fun of it. We take care of the messy stuff so that you don’t have to!

Please check out our store for a list of things on offer, and our guide to find out what you’ll need and how to get started.

Providing cake bases for events (corporate or otherwise)

We also take bulk orders for events. Cake or cupcake decoration activities make great team building exercises, or fun games on corporate retreats. They may also be decorated for company events using our image printing service.

Edible image printing service

If you need something a little bit more personalised, we can print out any image you send us – be it a logo, a picture, a photo, anything! – on a delicious edible candy sheet.

From us to Businesses

The Naked Cakes support system

For businesses, we provide a comprehensive suite of services, intended to help the home baker with their needs. From aiding in production to business support, we seek to provide a foundation of growth to allow you to have better control over all aspects of your set-up.

Here’s some of the things we can do for you:

Providing cake bases for business

We currently work with many home bakers and small-to-medium businesses to support their production line by providing cake bases for their individual needs.

We can help with your foundation by assisting in the cake-baking process. We freshly bake cake bases to order in a variety of available flavours, and provide them ‘naked’ for you to use as you wish. This allows you to expedite your workflow and increase productivity.

We integrate into your system, so no changes on your side are required.

What this means is that we bake your cake bases so that you don’t have to, any day of the week at any time, so there’s no need for messy rescheduling or workflow interruptions.

This frees up your kitchen and affords you free time, to allow you to concentrate on other goods and services.

In fact, with our comprehensively stocked kitchen, we may even be able to expand your current line-ups! We provide in a variety of shapes and sizes; from 4 – 10 inch, sheet cakes, to even less common shapes like spheres.

Privacy for business needs

Sometimes a bit of transparency is necessary. So let us be transparent: we treat private information with the utmost importance, and we understand that secrets are meant to be secret. We will never sell or use your personal information for any reason whatsoever, and we will always make sure your business contacts are not used in any way you don’t want it to be.

Naked Cakes will also never require any of our customers to reveal their relationship with us. We understand that for certain reasons, some entities may not want to disclose that they work with third parties. For this reason, we do not insist that any client tells their own customers they work with us.

QNA – FAQ- Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What forms of payment do you accept?

Currently, Naked Cakes only accepts orders from Singapore via internet or ATM transfer. We do not accept cash on delivery or credit cards. Please email us for further clarifications.

Q: What ingredients do you use for your cakes?

Our ingredients come from all over the world, flown in fresh. We dislike using preservatives or artificial flavourings, so all ingredients are prepared to order. We source the following ingredients from these countries:

– Butter from France and Denmark
– Chocolate from Germany and Italy
– Cream from England
– Fresh Fruits and Vegetables from Local Sources

Our Red Velvet and Rainbow Cakes also have a touch of food colouring, but all other colours are absolutely natural.

Q: Are your cakes Halal?

We use 100% Halal-certified ingredients in all our products. While we do not have the Halal certification ourselves, due to a wide and ever-changing range of products, we assure you that nothing that goes into our products come from a non-Halal source.

A lot of our close and personal Muslim friends frequently enjoy our products, so rest assured they’re all Halal-friendly.

Q: I have a dietary restriction/allergy. What should I know?

We offer ‘eggless’ varieties of our vanilla cake, rainbow cake, and vanilla cupcake. We do not use any eggs, butter or milk in these. However, vegetable oil and milk by-products are used.

Our orange almond cakes and cupcakes are also gluten and dairy-free. We replace flour with almond meal, and leave out the milk.

The machines that process our ingredients are also used to process nuts, and so, we cannot guarantee that our cakes are nut-free. However, only the orange almond and carrot cakes have any added nuts for flavour.

*Update as at 1st Jan 2018- To make it all easier, we have listed the common allergen ingredient under each product description. Please feel free to check with us before making an order if you are unsure.

Q: What is the shelf life of your products?

Since we don’t use preservatives, we recommend consuming your cakes or cupcakes within 7 days of purchase if stored in cold refrigeration (0 to 4 degrees Celsius). If you must keep it for longer, pack it in deep freeze (-4 degrees Celsius and below) and it will last up to 30 days. But of course, the fresher the better.

Our cookie dough keeps for up to one month in the freezer, and up to one week in the fridge, but they’re best enjoyed right out of the oven.

Q: I’m a beginner, and I know nothing about the art of making cakes. Where do I even begin?

It’s actually not that hard to put a cake together, once you know how! That’s why we wrote a handy GUIDE just for you. It comes with all the information you need, so if you’re new to the concept, be sure to give it a look.

Q: I don’t know how to layer and frost a cake. Can you do it for me?

Absolutely. We provide this service for you. Just add the item ‘CAKE SERVICE’ to your cart. That’ll let us know that we should go ahead and frost the cake for you. Currently, we only work with ganache for this service. If you need help deciding what you want, check out our GUIDE page, and get more information on our CAKE SERVICE catalogue page for clear instructions on how to order.

Q: I am a baker, and I have always been baking my own cakes from scratch. What is my incentive to order from Naked Cakes?

Naked Cakes isn’t here to take away the joy of baking. If you enjoy baking on your own, go right ahead. We’re bakers too, and we know the pride and fun of developing your own cakes from scratch.

But we know how tiring the baking process can be, and we also know the difficulty in making allergen-sensitive cakes, or having to make many different varieties of cake at the same time. So what we want to do is help take that trouble off your hands.

For the professional, what Naked Cakes seeks to do is offer assistance, not replacement. We want to expand your current range of cakes, so you have more to offer! Think of us as your happy little cake helpers. We save you immense time and costs by baking your bases, no matter the batch size, at our facilities, which leaves you with more time to work on decoration or presentation.

For larger batches, we can save you up to 10 – 12 hours a day on average per batch, and that’s just for the baking alone!

Q: I require a specific cake base flavour for my personal business, but I do not see this flavour being sold in your store. Will you be able to accommodate special requests?

It depends on the specific order. Unfortunately, we don’t do this too often, but we might be able to accommodate depending on the volume and other details. Just get in contact, and we’ll see what we can do.

Q: Do you sell themed cakes?

No. Naked Cakes sells cake bases for our customers to decorate themselves. However, if you need decorating services, we are pleased to say we do have a list of bakers* that we can recommend to you.

We also sell plastic cake toppers that we can source for you separately. These include character icons or things of other specific themes. Please get into contact with us for more details.

*Do note that these bakers operate independently from us and we are simply referring out of goodwill. We do not have any contractual agreement and thus not liable for their services
